WHEN IS HAJJ PERFORMED?
The time of Hajj is expressed as follows in a verse:

Zill Hijjah
Is the last month of the Islaamic calendar.
Is the last month of the Islaamic calendar.
Our Beloved Prophet Hazrat Muhammad [Sallal Laahu Alaiehi Wa Sallam] stated the following in a Hadees:
Islaam is based on five principles: to testify that none has the right to be worshiped but Allaah and Muhammad is Allaah's Prophet, to perform prayers, to pay Zakaat (alms), to perform Hajj, to observe fast during the month of Ramadaan. |
THE CONDITIONS FOR CORRECT HAJJ
The following conditions are necessary for Hajj to be valid. 1- To be a Muslim, 2- To be sane, 3- To perform Hajj during the specified period, 4- To perform Hajj at the specified places, that is, Arafa'at and the Ka'bah. |
Two Types of Worship There are two types of worships / Ibaadaat in Islaam, one is worship / Ibaadaat of body and second is worship by one’s wealth. There are few rituals that are performed physically and few by charities. The physical worship is prayer while the worship by wealth is Zakaat, if we collect these two it becomes Hajj because it has worship by body as well as wealth.
WHO IS HAJJ FARZ FOR? As Islaam has five basic pillars; one, Witness of Allaah and his Prophet Hazrat Muhammad ﷺ that is in the Ieemaan-e-Mufaasil and Ieemaan Mujaamil, 2nd, five compulsory Prayers, 3rd, Zakaat, 4th, Fasting and 5th, Hajj. Zakat and Hajj are such worships that are not compulsory on every Muslim. Zakat is compulsory over the one who is Sahib-Nisaab that is one who has wealth beyond his needs and that wealth reaches a specific limit of Zakat and a year passes over that wealth then Zakat becomes compulsory while Hajj is compulsory over the one who has the means to offer Hajj. Meaning that he has health and wealth that he can travel to Makkah Mukarramaah, offer specific rituals in specific days and he has such money to meet the expenses and enough money to give to his family to meet their expenses during the time period he is away from home. |

ESSENTIALS OF HAJJ AND HOW TO PERFORM IT
|
The Meaning of Hajj
ENTERING IHRAAM Leaving one’s home and journeying towards Allaah’s home (Ka’bah) for pilgrimage is known as Hajj. Hajj is compulsory for him/her once in life whoever has the capability (health, wealth etc.). Hajj has five days and specific places, there are two compulsory rituals of Hajj: one, is Tawwaf (circling) around Baiet-Ul laah and the second, is the Waqoof (staying) at the field of Arafa’at, if these two rituals are missed then there is no Hajj. Wearing IHRAAM (special dress consisting of two sheets of white cloth for Hajj) before Meeqaat, a place beyond which one cannot go without Ihraam. These places have been specified for the people coming from all over the world. Now a day’s, people wear Ihraam from their homes. After wearing Ihraam one should offer two Raka’at Nawafil, in the first Raka’at one should recite Soorah Al-Kaafiroon after Soorah Faatihah, and in the second Raka’at one should recite Soorah Ikhlaas after Soorah Faatihah. These Nafil should be offered by wearing cap / covering head with a piece of cloth. After this he would remove the cap and make intention for Hajj and recite Talbiyaah. “LABBAIEK ALLAAH HUMAA LABBAIEK, LABBAIEKA LAA SHAREEKAA LAKA LABBAIEK, INNAL HAMDAA WAA NAIEMATAA LAKAA WAL MULK LAA SHAREEKAA LAKAA”. It should be repeated continuously again and again in the whole journey till one sees Baiet-Ul laah. One should keep their gaze low walking towards it and once you see the Blessed Ka’bah, do dua, for this is the moment the first glance when duas get accepted. |
TALBIYAAH
THREE TYPES OF HAJJ-QIRAAN-TAMATTU- IFRAAD
There are three types of Hajj, Ifraad, Qiraan and Tamattu`.
Qiraan: The type of Hajj in which the pilgrim pronounces his intention to perform both `Umraah and Hajj together with the same Ihraam at the Meeqaat. Tamaattu`: The type of Hajj in which the pilgrim pronounces his intention to perform only `Umraah at the Meeqaat when changing into Ihraam. The pilgrim performs `Umraah and then goes out of Ihraam until the 8th of Zill Hajj. On that day, the pilgrim makes a second intention and a second change into Ihraam for the performance of the remaining rites of Hajj. |
TAWWAAF |
Ifraad: The type of Hajj in which the pilgrim pronounces his intention to perform only Hajj (as opposed to Hajj and `Umraah) at the Meeqaat while changing into Ihraam.
تابعوا بين الحج والعمرة فإنهما ينفيان الفقر والذنوب كما ينفي الكير خبث الحديد والذهب والفضة وليس للحجة المبرورة ثواب إلا الجنة
“Make the Hajj and the Umraah follow each other closely, (wear the Ihraam for Qiraan, in which the intention of Hajj and ‘Umraah is done or perform both the Hajj and ‘Umrah consecutively) for they remove poverty and sins as a furnace removes impurities from iron, gold and silver; and Hajj which is accepted, its reward is Paradise.” |
Tawwaaf e Hajj
Tawwaaf means circling around Baiet-Ul laah. If it is the time of prayer and one has not offered prayer, he should offer prayer first. Then he should come towards Ka’bah-tul laah in such a way that Hajr Aswad (sacred stone) is on right side, make intention of Tawwaaf, the Arabic words are present in the published books, if one cannot read Arabic he/she may make intention in his own language i.e. O’ Allaah Almighty, I make intention to complete seven circles around Your home, make it easier for me, and accept it from me (if you are doing for someone else then you may take his/her name). This is the only worship in which during pray it is said “Allaah Almighty make it easier for me” we do not say so in any other worship. We do not say that Allaah I am going to offer prayer or starting fast or giving up Zakat make it easier for me but in the Hajj and Umrah in each intention it is said that Allaah make it easier for me and accept it from me. Meaning by, we were not able to do so if we did not had the help of Allaah Almighty. Reaching there and fulfilling all the rituals is only due to the blessings of Allaah Kareem. Before starting Tawwaf, men should make their right shoulder uncovered / naked i.e. pass the cloth sheet through his armpit, this is Sunnah of Hazrat Muhammad ﷺ which is known as Ramal as well as Iztibaa. First three circles around the House of Allaah should be completed with small steps, if due to crowd one cannot do so, there is no restriction, seven circles in total are to be completed. Now a day’s, people keep talking over mobile and telling their dear ones that they have completed so many circles. This is wrong, one is present in the house of Allaah, pay full attention towards Allaah Kareem but one is talking about worldly affairs what a strange behavior, May Allaah guide us. Some people keep busy in making pictures as there are cameras installed in almost all mobiles, people are busy in making pictures but do not pay attention that where they are and in front of Whom. |
RAML-IDTIBAA-IZTIBAA
Raml: The ritual in which male pilgrims are required to walk briskly with their chests thrust forward and with their shoulders rolling slightly during the first three circuits
|
IZTIBAA/IDTIBAA:
It denotes the act of placing [both ends of] sheet on the left shoulder passing under the right arm-pit before performing Tawaaf. Thus keeping the right shoulder bare. |
ISTILAAM-HAJR E ASWADTo kiss Hajar-e-Aswad placing the palms of both hands on it with the face between them, if possible, otherwise touch the hands or stick with it and kiss them/that or give it a flying kiss.
It is a black stone which serves as a point for the pilgrims to begin from and end at it their Tawwaaf of the House of Allaah Almighty.
There is not a single Muslim who does not long to kiss this stone. First a brief introduction of this stone. Hadees tells us that this is one of the White Yaqoot (rubies) from heavens. Hazrat Aadam [Alaiehis Salaam] took it into his hand when he was sent to the earth from heaven. Another version is that it was sent by Allaah [Ta’aalaa] through Jibraaeel [Aaliehis Salaam].According to the Ahadees, this stone got dark (black) due to the sins of the people. Meaning that it was shining white stone when it was sent to the earth but due to the touch of non-believers and sins of people it became dark. According to Ahadees if this has not been darkened due to sins and touch of non-believers, its shine would have been in the whole world. ....
First it was known as “Hajr” but after it got dark it is known as Hajr Aswad (Aswad means black in Arabic). Eight small pieces of this stone have been placed in silver bowl meaning whole stone is not Hajr Aswad as this was broken several times. These eight pieces were fixed in a big stone professionally by artisans. It was taken to heavens during the flood of Hazrat Nooh [Alaiehis Salaam] and when Hazrat Ibraaheem [Alaiehis Salaam]reconstructed the Kabaah it was reaffixed as well because Kabaah have been constructed several times. When Quraiesh constructed Kabaah, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was present at Makkah but had not announced prophet-hood yet. Different families or tribes took part in the construction of Kabaah so that no one demolishes Kabaah later, but when the time for fixing of Hajr Aswad came, all the tribes got at daggers drawn as they wanted to fix it with their hands. In such situation someone gave them advice that whoever enters into Kabaah first (from to now on) he will decide that how to fix Hajr Aswad.
By the will of Allaah Kareem the person who entered into Kabaah (early in morning) was My Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, everyone got happy to see Prophet. Prophet listened to all of them, and decided to put Hajr Aswad in a piece of cloth and asked all tribal leaders to lift stone by holding the cloth. Look at the far vision and judgmental power of Prophet Muhammad [Sallal Laahu Alaiehi Wa Sallam]that everyone got satisfied by taking part in carrying the stone and when it came near to the Kabaah, prophet fixed it with his own hands in the wall of Kabaah. Just imagine the relation of this stone with our beloved Prophet that it was fixed by him and several times kissed by him. So Hazrat Umar [Radiyal Laahu Anhu] kissed the stone and said I would have never kissed you if Prophet Muhammad [Sallal Laahu Alaiehi Wa Sallam] had not kissed you, you can neither give any benefit nor cause loss. According to the Prophet every believer who kisses it, it would stand witness in his favor on the Day of Judgment, it would be given lips and eyes on that day. Look at the blessings of Prophet Muhammad [Sallal Laahu Alaiehi Wa Sallam], he visited Kabaah and a bloody war was thwarted while Hajr Aswad was fixed peacefully. Hajr Aswad is that point from which Tawwaaff starts and ends. Hajr Aswad is stone of heaven (paradise), neither can it be set on fire nor does it sink in the water. The most important fact, it has been told in the Hadees as that whoever wants to shake hand with Allaah Kareem should kiss it, because it has been appointed as symbolic to Almighty Allaah’s hand in this world. How blessed we are being follower of Muhammad ﷺ due to whom we have been blessed with uncountable blessings and sacred places, we thank Almighty Allah. May Allaah Kareem bless us all to see and kiss Hajr Aswad. This is the point where every prayer is answered… HUDOOD UL HARAMThe vast area around the holy Makkah having boundary lines on all sides. This include the whole Makkah [city], Minaa and Muzdalifa with the exclusion of' Arafaat. It is Haraam [unlawful] to hurt the beasts even the wild pigeon’s within the limits of Haram-e-Ka'bah and even to uproot the grass of the holy land is unlawful.

MAQAAM-E-IBRAAHEEM
[Alaiehis Salaam]
There is a stone placed in glass case before the door of Sacred Ka'bah which has the imprints of the feet of
Prophet Ibraaheem [Alaiehis-Salaam] who rested his feet on it
while constructing the Holy Ka'bah.
After completing seven circles of Tawwaaf, two Nafal Wajib (compulsory) are to be offered with the intention of Tawwaaf that are to be offered near Maqaam Ibraaheem (place of Ibraaheem [Alaiehis Salaam] but as there is crowd during Hajj, Nafil may be offered anywhere in Mutaa’af. After this one should come near the door of Ka’bah known as Multaazim, if one gets access one should cling to the wall of Ka’bah, cry and pray there as prayers are accepted at this pace. Ka’bah has four corners, out of which one is known as Rukn-e-Yemaani over the right side of the Hajr-e-Aswad, one should touch it with hand and kiss once during seven circles because it has been narrated in the Saheeh Ibne Khuzaimaa (book of Hadees) that Hazrat Muhammad ﷺ also did so. Prophet ﷺ said that as Hajr Aswad was affixed over it in the past so it may not feel abandoned now. Although this is only a stone but Prophet ﷺ gave him respect, this means that due to the link, stone also becomes important.

Arafaah or `Arafa'at: A desert location, surrounding Mount of Mercy
The Holy city of Makkah abounds with numerous mosques and other places that witnessed events that happened to Prophet Muhammad. Among the most important holy sites in Makkah are the sites where pilgrimage rituals are performed.
One of them is Mount Arafaat. It was called Arafaat [to Know or meet] because Hazrat Aadam [Alaiehis Salaam] met Hazrat Hawwa [Alaiehis Salaam] after doing Taubaah. Araafat is outside the boundaries of the Holy sanctuary. It is to the south east of the Sacred Mosque, and is 22 kilometers away from the Mosque. The area of this site is 10.4 square kilometers. Muslim pilgrims gather on Mount Araafat on the 9th day of Zill Hijjah they shorten and combine the Noon and Afternoon prayers....following the sunnat our beloved Prophet Muhammad

(Jabal e Rahmat),which is approximately 14.5 km (9 miles) southeast of Makkah where the pilgrim spends 9 Zill-Hijjah as a rite of Hajj. Our Beloved Prophet Hazrat Muhammad [Peace be upon Him] recited the Farewell Sermon there. Waqfaah, standing, which is one of the constituents of Hajj is performed in Arafa'at.
The Beloved Prophet Muhammad [Sallal Laahu Alaiehi Wa Sallam] said, "There is no day on which Allaah Kareem sets free more slaves from Hell than He does on the Day of 'Arafaa'at"

The basins were introduced after the year 1292 A.H. so as to alleviate the crowds and gather the pebbles in one place. Because of the growing numbers of pilgrims, a 2nd floor was built for pilgrims to throw stones.
